Bahrain Holidays

The small, Middle Eastern nation of Bahrain is made up of 33 islands strewn throughout the Arabian Gulf, the largest of which is where you’ll find most of the country’s fabulous luxury hotels and shopping. Bahrain is one of the most forward-thinking states in the region, welcoming modern travellers keen to immerse themselves in the culture – and the sun. There are stunning white beaches lapped by warm seas, air-conditioned malls, upscale restaurants and lively nightclubs, mostly centred in the capital city, Manama.

That said, there’s much more to a holiday in Bahrain than luxury experiences! The country is steeped in cultural heritage, from ancient mosques dating back to 700 AD to Bronze Age ruins. The pearl industry long played an important part in Bahrain’s economy, its history laid bare in old pearling towns like the UNESCO-stamped Muharraq, with its ornate houses and the Qal’at Bu Mahir fortress that are fascinating to explore. Action-seekers won’t be found wanting with watersports, a golf course and Formula One Grand Prix race track that you can visit; another reason why Bahrain is an unexpected gem in the Middle East.

Bahrain Activities

From cultural experiences to high-octane sporting events, Bahrain is filled with activities and things to do. Explore the bazaars, gold souq and carpet shops in the capital, Manama for trinkets and souvenirs to bring back home or take part in aquatic adventures whether pearl diving, SUP yoga sessions or diving and snorkelling the waters around Jarada Island. Families will love a day out at the Al Alreen Wildlife Park & Reserve where you can see indigenous wildlife including Arabian oryx, while sports enthusiasts will not want to miss out on tickets to the Formula 1 Grand Prix held every March or April.

Bahrain Food & Drink

Bahrain’s culinary scene is one of al fresco dining options, chic rooftop bars and traditional hole-in-the-wall shawarma stalls – these sell the ubiquitous snack food of meat, sauce, lettuce and fries wrapped in chapati. Experience the best in international cuisine at Block 338 in the trendy Adliya neighbourhood where you’ll come across everything from burgers to Japanese. Got a sweeth tooth? You’ve come to the place! In Bahrain food and drink tends to be sweet whether it’s munching on date-filled cookies or drinking rose lattes. It’s also worth noting that you can legally purchase alcohol in Bahrain outside of bars or restaurants.

Bahrain Attractions

One of Bahrain’s main attractions – and a cultural landmark – is the Bahrain National Museum where it’s permanent and temporary exhibitions detail 6000 years of the country’s history. And speaking of history... a visit to the Bu Maher Fort is the first stop on the ‘history pearl trail’ due to its significance as the former main fishing harbour. But this isn’t the only fort of importance in Bahrain, the 16th century Portugese-built Qal’at al-Bahrain is one of the country’s few UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It’s worth remembering that Friday is a day of prayer in Bahrain and some attractions may be closed in the morning or throughout the entire day.
