This whirlwind itinerary is the ideal trip for the first-time visitor to Vietnam. Discover the highlights of Vietnam from the capital city of Hanoi to the bustling Ho Chi Minh City. During the trip, you can enjoy a relaxing cruise on Halong Bay, relax in the charming beach town of Hoi An, learn about the Vietnam war and visit the amazing Cu Chi tunnels and see how locals live on the Mekong Delta.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi

On arrival at the airport you'll be met by your local guide and transfer to your hotel for check in. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore the city.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before setting off on a full-day tour of Vietnam’s capital city, including Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum (closed on Monday & Friday), traditional stilt house, One-Pillar Pagoda, and the thousand-year-old Temple of Literature also known as the First University of Vietnam. In the afternoon visit the Ethnology Museum (closed on Monday) where you could learn a lot about diversified cultural of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. Return to city centre and enjoy a walking tour to discover the colonial side of the city, the city’s traditional 36 streets in the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem lake and Ngoc Son Pagoda at the edge of the lake.

After breakfast, leave Hanoi and head straight to Halong Bay, a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site with its 3,000 islands of towering limestone dotting the bay and Gulf of Tonkin. Arriving at noon, you will board a beautiful boat for an overnight cruise with an excellent menu of fresh seafood. Lunch and dinner are served on boat.

Day 3: Hanoi to Halong Bay

Wake up early in the morning to enjoy the aquamarine water of the bay at its best. After breakfast, continue to cruise quietly through the spectacular limestone formations of Halong Bay. Enjoy the peacefulness of sailing amongst the unique islands of the bay. Return to Halong harbour and disembark at around 11:00am for your transfer directly to Hanoi Airport and your flight to Danang. Upon arrival, you'll be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Hoi An.

Day 4: Halong Bay to Hoi An

After breakfast, depart by private vehicle or by bicycle for a discovery tour of Hoi An. Head to Cua Dai Pier for a boat ride to the mouth of Thu Bon river and enjoy the daily activities of the fishermen throwing fishing net and trading their products. On arrival at a small village, changing to smaller bamboo boat (a coracle) to discover a distinctive mangrove forest and try your hand at fishing for crabs. This excursion also gives you a chance to admire skillful fishermen who are working in the forest. Enjoy a delicious BBQ seafood lunch at a lovely local house. Back to visit the old town of Hoi An, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site because of its unusually well-preserved ancient streets and homes. On a walking tour you'll visit the Japanese Bridge, the Chinese Temple, and the Tan Ky Chinese-style trading house. End your tour at the Reaching Out tea house in the centre of the Old Quarter. Continue to explore the shops, cafe and restaurants of the Old Town or head back to your hotel.

Day 5: Hoi An Sightseeing

After all the activity of the past few day, today is free of activities for you to enjoy at leisure. Perhaps you might wander around the Old Quarter or relax on the white sands of Cua Dai Beach. 

We can arrange an optional cooking class where you visit a local market and then the chef's home before indulging in some Vietnamese dishes - ask us for details.

Spend the morning relaxing in Hoi An before being transferred to Danang airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival you'll be greeted and met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel for check in. The rest of the day and evening is free to explore and get a sense of the city.

Day 7:  Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City

Cu Chi Tunnels and Ho Chi Minh Sightseeing

After breakfast, meet your guide to visit the amazing tunnel network of Cu Chi. This incredible system, covering almost 250km in length was shelter to over 16,000 Vietcong guerrillas during the wars. Initially started in 1948 to provide shelter against the French air and ground sweeps, the network went on to serve as communication routes, storage facilities, hospitals and living quarters for Vietnamese fighters throughout the American war. If you are interested (and game) you can even descend into the tunnels to learn more about the harsh conditions faced by Vietcong guerrillas who lived there.

Heading back to the city, this afternoon enjoy a tour of the former capital of French Indochina. Historic landmarks include the Old Saigon Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Opera House. You'll also visit the Reunification Palace which was used as the headquarters of the Saigon Government during the American war in the 60s. End the day with a visit to the ethnic Chinese district of Cholon and test your bargaining skills at Ben Thanh market.

Day 8: Cu Chi Tunnels and  Ho Chi Minh Sightseeing

Today you'll visit Ben Tre in the Mekong Delta. First up, visit the handicraft workshop by bus before walking to the paddle pier to take a rowing-boat through the canals. You'll see the coconut stretchers and other aspects of daily life by the river. Stop to visit the grapefruit and coconut gardens where you can pick your own coconuts and tropical fruit. Next up, after a tour through the village, enjoy a local lunch with dishes of Mekong River region. In the afternoon, take a walk through the village and meet with local people and get involved with some of the community activities such as weeding and fertilising the garden or watering the coconut, coca and grapefruit groves. Later, take boat trip along Ba Lai legend river and stop to visit the coconut coir manufacturing facility. Cruise a little further along the river and visit a coconut processing workshops to see how the locals make bricks by hand in the coconut kiln. After a full day on the Mekong return to your hotel in the city.
