Travel Tips & Advice for Lisbon

Lisbon Activities

Get busy in Lisbon! Climb the winding paths up through the city’s oldest neighbourhood of Alfama to its hilltop castle or wander the narrow streets of the Baixa district, ride the number 28 tram to Elevador de Santa Justa and take a boat ride along the Tagus River. Have an extra day or two? Take the train west to the hilltop town of Sintra home to fairy tale palaces or head to one of the excellent beaches along the Atlantic Coast.

Lisbon Food & Drink

Fresh seafood takes centre stage in Lisbon – sample bacalhau à Brás (shredded salted cod, fried potatoes and scrambled eggs), said to have originated in the Bairro Alto area of the city or dine on mariscada a mixed seafood and rice dish. Check out the food courts of Mercado da Ribeira and Mercado de Campo de Ourique, sip rich fortified port wine at upscale bars and be sure to eat pastéis de nata – a custard tart covered in cinnamon and a Lisbon classic for over 150 years!

Lisbon Attractions

Lisbon may not have big name galleries or museums like many other European capitals, but it has its gems that are undoubtedly worth a look - high on our list is the National Azulejo Museum dedicated to azulejo (tiles). The city also plays host to two World Heritage Sites – the Mosterio dos Jerónimos and Torre de Belém. You’ll also not want to leave without looking out over the incredible views from the medieval (and slightly Moorish) Castelo de São Jorge.
