Montenegro Holidays

It’s said that the best things come in small packages… and nowhere is that more true than Montenegro. Roughly two-thirds the size of Wales, this miniscule Balkan country has become one of Europe’s most exciting holiday destinations thanks to its pristine beaches – there are more than 100 scattered along the Adriatic coast – which are backdropped by dark green forested mountains where fresh-air adventures are plentiful.

Add to this medieval towns steeped in history and filled with cobbled streets and ancient churches and you have a nation that welcomes everyone from sun-seekers to intrepid travellers. And while holidays to Montenegro, known as Crna Gora in the native Montenegrin language, have traditionally been overlooked in favour of trips to neighbouring Croatia, this is changing in part due to the emergence of a growing number of luxury hotels along the coast. In fact, Kotor, with its UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjord-like bay might just be our new favourite travel destination!

Montenegro Activities

From the coast to the mountains, Montenegro is bursting with outdoor activities and adventures. Explore the cobalt-blue waters of the Bay of Kotor on a serene boat ride or travel further along the shoreline to Budva, your best bet for watersports and buzzing nightlife. Hike to the top of Sveti Ivan Fortress or head inland to one of the forested national parks for more challenging trails and white water rafting opportunities. Or slow things down with a train ride between Bar, Prodgorica and the Serbian capital Belgrade – picturesque views guaranteed.

Montenegro Food & Drink

Food in Montenegro is fresh and flavoursome and draws influence from both the Mediterranean and the Balkans with local ingredients pulled from land and sea. Italian staples tend to dominate the menus in many of the popular coastal towns, but you’ll also find traditional cevabdzinicas, grilled meat shops, as well as local konobas serving grilled kebabs, cabbage stuffed with mince and Turkish-inspired burek (pastry filled delights). Coffee is a staple, as is the strong fruit spirit, rakija – stick to local wine and beer to avoid a sore head in the morning!

Montenegro Attractions

Attractions in Montenegro range from natural splendours to cultural wonders. In the heart of the country is Durmitor National Park, home to the 1,300-metre deep Tara River Canyon – the second deepest in the world behind the Grand Canyon – and in the remotest areas, wolves and bears! On the border with Albania, you’ll find Skadar Lake, the largest in the Balkans and a hotspot for birdwatchers, while the 17th century, white-washed Ostrog Monastery is literally carved into the cliffside and is one of the holiest sites in the country for Orthodox Christians.
