While glimpses of Mt Fuji can be seen from Tokyo on a clear day, to really experience this magnificence of this sacred mountain, you need to get up close – and what better way to do so than climb it? Climbing season is from July – September, though weather can be changeable so come prepared! In the wider Hakone National Park you can soaking in the onsens (hot springs), go fishing or take part in watersports on Lake Kawaguchi or cruise Lake Ashi.

Within Hakone National Park (and in the towns and train stations in the areas) you’ll found the ubiquitous noodle restaurants with soba noodles, made from buckwheat flour, an ever-popular choice. If you’re visiting the Owakudani area don’t miss your chance to purchase kuro-tamago – these chicken eggs have been cooked in water containing sulphur, turning their shells black; it’s said if you eat one you’ll add seven years to your life!

Around Mt Fuji and Hakone there are a number of shrines – at the bottom of the north side of Mt Fuji is its Sengen Shrine, once a natural starting point for pilgrims climbing the mountain, while the torri gates of the Hakone Shrine sit on the shores of Lake Ashi with the shrine itself hidden within the forest behind. And experience ‘hell’ at Owakudani‘s Valley of Hell with its bubbling pools, the smell of sulphur in the air and steam rising from the ground.
