Portuguese food is simple, filling and cooked using local ingredients wherever possible. Bacalhau or salt cod is a national favourite and you’ll find it served in a variety of different ways; pastéis de nata is a legendary Lisbon pastry and francesinha a speciality sandwich originating in Porto. Try a glass (or bottle) of Portuguese wine – the fortified port wine is a firm favourite! When dining out expect to be brought dishes of olives, bread and cheese – but be warned, these are not complimentary.

Stretching out over 800km, the Portuguese coastline is one of the country’s biggest draw cards with its hidden coves, sandy dunes, unusual-looking rock stacks and gentle cliffs. Beaches aside, there are 15 World Heritage Sites to visit, chief among them the historic centre of Porto and the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça. And as one of the oldest countries in Europe you’ll find baroque churches, impressive cathedrals and the fairy tale-like palaces of Sintra.
