Holidays To Other Mexico Destinations

If you’ve lazed on the beaches along the Riviera Maya, checked into the All Inclusives of Cancun and visited Tulum’s clifftop ruins, then it’s time to discover another side of Mexico. Travel beyond the country’s holiday hotspots and you’ll find that many lesser-known spots are just as worth exploring, whether you’re seeking a palm-fringed beach, cultural highlights or buzzing city life.

On the eastern Caribbean coast, south of Tulum are the pretty, quiet beaches of Costa Maya, home to peaceful fishing villages and excellent diving spots, and where archaeological sites and Bacalar, the ‘lagoon of seven colours’ can be found in the jungle-clad interior. Further west is the city of Oaxaca, given UNESCO World Heritage status it’s known for inventive cuisine, a vibrant arts and crafts scene and historic boutique hotels – it’s also considered the capital of mezcal.

And then there’s the central Pacific coast, a mixture of stunning natural beauty, chilled out surfing spots and lively resort towns complete with luxury All Inclusive hotels. Puerto Vallarta – made famous by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in the 1960s – is one of the most popular beach towns for locals, while Zihuatanejo (or Zihua to those in the know) is a surfers paradise backdropped by the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. And don’t overlook Guadalajara, an urban metropolis with a sense of historic charm, that’s the birthplace of many quintessential Mexican traditions from mariachi music to sombreros.

Travel Tips & Advice For Other Mexico Destinations

Other Mexico Destinations Activities

Bordered by two stretching coastlines, it’s no surprise that water-based activities are popular when holidaying in Mexico. The waters off the Costa Maya, home to the second largest barrier reef in the world and a biosphere reserve are particularly excellent for diving and snorkelling. On the Pacific coast, surfing is the number one activity with warm waters year-round and waves suitable for beginners as well as experienced surfers. Back on land, golf is becoming increasingly popular with nearly 200 courses around the country including those designed by famed golfer Jack Nicklaus – El Tigre in Nuevo Vallarta is considered one of the most challenging courses in Mexico.

Other Mexico Destinations Food & Drink

Did you know that Mexican cuisine was given UNESCO culinary heritage status in 2010? One of the best places to try out different regional dishes is at a food market (or mercado municipal) where everything from fresh fruits and dried spaces to delicious snacks are sold. For something a little unusual try grasshoppers on tlayudas, a thin and crispy tortilla popular in Oaxaca. And when it comes to a tipple instead of tequila, try a glass of mezcal, a liquor also made from agave plants but with a peppery or smokey flavour – just remember, it’s meant to be sipped! Another favourite beverage across Mexico is hot chocolate, typically flavoured with cinnamon and vanilla or even chillies.

Other Mexico Destinations Attractions

Regardless of where you are in Mexico, there are exciting opportunities for wildlife encounters. Our favourite ways of getting wild include watching the humpback whale migration along the Pacific coast in the winter months and helping to release baby turtles once they’ve hatched. And no trip to Mexico would be complete with taking in some of the country’s cultural attractions - head to the Costa Maya to see the ancient archaeological sites of Dzibanché and Kohunlich where Mayan ruins sit within lush jungle. Or make your way to Oaxaca State and the Museo de Artesanías Oaxaqueñas dedicated to promoting Mexican traditions and culture through the display of handicrafts from pottery and colourful Zapotec rugs to brightly coloured alebrijes or folk art.
