Holidays to Salalah

One of the largest sea ports in the Gulf, Frankincense has been produced here since ancient times and the scent of it lingers in the air wherever you go. Salalah is defined by its fragrances as much as its scenery - to the north, mountains, springs and waterfalls contrast with long stretches of beautiful palm-fringed white sandy beaches to the south – some of the most beautiful in the country. And in the interior, past the plantations of papaya, banana and coconut palms, the rolling red dunes of the Empty Desert await. Less than two hours’ flight from Muscat, Salalah is Oman’s second largest city and a year-round holiday destination offering a wide range of outdoor activities no matter the season. Explore the Frankincense Museum, shop for souvenirs at the Gold Souk and visit a local mountain-dwelling family to learn about their daily lives, culture and traditions. Travel Tips & Advice for Salalah

Salalah Activities

Step back in time to when this town was a simple trading port and learn about the age-old history of the Frankincense industry. Explore the Lost City of Ubar, a former excavation site of the former Frankincense trading centre, and learn more about the trade at the Museum of the Frankincense Land. Looking for a little souvenir shopping? Head toOman House Handicrafts or the Al Husn Souq, known for its aromatic Frankincense and pick up a traditional Omani hat – while here, you’ll be able to see how they’re made. Or simply put your feet up and relax in the sunshine along one of Salalah’s most beautiful golden beaches.

Salalah Food & Drink

A blend of Arabian and Indian influences, Salalah offers mainly chicken, lamb and fish dishes with shwarmas and biryanis being one of the most popular items on the menu. The food is less spicy here than the rest of the Gulf and the portions are very generous – so come hungry! You’ll also find versions of Middle Eastern meze here and plenty of Omani dates and preserved fruit. As the country is Islamic, alcohol is forbidden for locals who prefer strong coffee (kahwa) flavoured with cardamom rather than alcohol yet drinks are still served at licensed restaurants and hotels for tourists. If you’re feeling adventurous, try Laban, a salty combination of yoghurt and buttermilk or a yoghurt drink flavoured with cardamom and pistachio nuts.

Salalah Climate

Salalah has a hot desert climate with almost no rainfall all year round. The average temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Most rainfall occurs between the months of July and August (monsoon season) when the landscape is awash in beautiful shades of lime greens. The warmest time of the year is May when temperatures soar to about a 29 degree average with a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius while the coolest period is in January and the wettest month is July. With fantastic weather no matter the season, there’s no better time than now to plan your trip to Salalah.
