Travel Tips & Advice for Zambia

Activities in Zambia

When in Zambia, there are plenty of exciting game viewing opportunities on offer, whether you choose to spot the Big Five on foot, by boat or by canoe. Opt for relaxing leisure activities such as golfing or shopping in Livingstone or Lusaka, take a scenic helicopter flight over the reserves to the Zambian side of Victoria Falls or end the day with a peaceful sunset cruise along the spectacular Lake Kariba. Dare to up the pace with exciting adventures such as lion walks, white water rafting and bungee jumping over the Victoria Falls.

Food and Drink in Zambia

Zambia has a wide range of international cuisine with plenty of game meat and biltong on offer but while you’re here, we recommend trying local, homemade alternatives. Taste Nshima (a stiff porridge made from ground maize), Kapenta (salted and dried sardine), the alcoholic milkshake Chibuku (sorghum beer) or the non-alcoholic version, Munkoyo made from maize meal and the roots of the Munkoyo tree. For those feeling adventurous, sautéed insects – grasshoppers, caterpillars, cicadas and mopane worms - are seasonal delicacies in Zambia.

Attractions in Zambia

Game viewing in Zambia’s reserves is something special. Visit Kafue National Park, Zambia’s oldest and largest national park, see the world’s largest bat migration at Kasanka National Park or explore the unspoilt plains of Lower Zambezi National Park. Experience Zambia as the locals do by visiting a “compound” where you can taste homemade beer at a local pub.  Don’t miss the Saturday Dutch Market, Zambia’s largest open-air market in Lusaka. Spot incredible wildlife on the shores of Lake Kariba and discover magical waterfalls, most famous of all is Victoria Falls – known as the “Smoke that Thunders”.
