Holidays To Portugal

With its expansive stretches of sand and impossibly picturesque modern towns, Portugal is undeniably attractive for both an intriguing city break and laidback beach escape. Europe’s most westerly country may be relatively small but it certainly packs a punch with its varied scenery from the mountains bordering Spain and a lengthy coastline to valleys dotted with terraced vineyards. Here, a rich cultural landscape of fado music and Moorish-influenced azulejos is seamlessly combined with endless outdoor pursuits from surfing to hiking. Make the most of a year-round Mediterranean climate with summer-time trips to the Algarve, ride the trams and eat custard tarts in the capital, Lisbon and taste your way through the wines of the Douro Valley.

Travel Tips & Advice for Portugal

Portugal Activities

If your holiday needs more than sun-filled days on the beach, fear not – Portugal has plenty to keep active types busy. Find the perfect wave surfing along the Alentejo coast, tee off at one of the championship golf courses in the Algarve and hike the Rota Vicentina, a long distance walking trail covering 400km of coastline. Inland, visit the vineyards or take a river cruise in the Douro Valley, ride on the back of a Lusitano horse and trek through Peneda-Gerês National Park.

Portugal Food & Drink

Portuguese food is simple, filling and cooked using local ingredients wherever possible. Bacalhau or salt cod is a national favourite and you’ll find it served in a variety of different ways; pastéis de nata is a legendary Lisbon pastry and francesinha a speciality sandwich originating in Porto. Try a glass (or bottle) of Portuguese wine – the fortified port wine is a firm favourite! When dining out expect to be brought dishes of olives, bread and cheese – but be warned, these are not complimentary.

Portugal Attractions

Stretching out over 800km, the Portuguese coastline is one of the country’s biggest draw cards with its hidden coves, sandy dunes, unusual-looking rock stacks and gentle cliffs. Beaches aside, there are 15 World Heritage Sites to visit, chief among them the historic centre of Porto and the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça. And as one of the oldest countries in Europe you’ll find baroque churches, impressive cathedrals and the fairy tale-like palaces of Sintra.
