Holidays to French Polynesia

The islands of French Polynesia are as well known for their laidback lifestyle, welcoming spirit and colourful culture as they are for heavenly beaches, verdant volcanic peaks and turquoise lagoons, making for a luxury holiday like no other. Whereas Bora Bora is known for its blend of irresistible overwater bungalows, five-star hotels and all-inclusive opulence – a honeymooner’s dream – Tahiti picks up the cultural baton, with its local cuisine, charming coastal towns and love of dance and music. Whether scuba diving, kayaking over crystalline waters or hiking little-known nature trails to hidden waterfalls, French Polynesia serves up a surprising amount of action and adventure for a region which has built a reputation based on complete relaxation, world-class resorts and picture-perfect beaches. This collection of idyllic islands is far more versatile than they may first appear, with intriguing archaeological finds on Moorea and a castaway feel to be found on Vahine adding to the already heady mix of mountains, snorkelling and cultural demonstrations. If all of this seems too much however, then rest assured, that no matter which of these pristine islands you choose, pampering and pure indulgence is never far away in French Polynesia.

Travel Tips & Advice for French Polynesia

French Polynesia Activities

Discover the islands of French Polynesia by land or by water. Go snorkelling with shark and stingray in Bora Bora, explore Papeete by Segway and sail off into the sunset on a cruise of Tahiti or Moorea. There’s plenty of activities to indulge in that allow a glimpse into authentic Polynesian culture – take a Tahitian dance class, watch Polynesian fire dancers perfect their art or brave up and get a traditional Polynesian tattoo. When you feel like relaxing, spend a day wine tasting Tahitian wines, see the underwater world by glass-bottomed boat or explore by stand up paddle boarding. The options are endless.

French Polynesia Food & Drink

With a strong Polynesian influence, the cuisine here is known for its fresh fruit and vegetables and just about everything comes with a side of coconut milk. You’ll find all sorts of cuisine here, particularly French but Tahitian, Chinese, Vietnamese and Italian too. Papeete is believed to be the food capital of Tahiti so come here for a Tahitian Feast – held at least once every week. While in French Polynesia, you have to try poisson cru, a dish of raw fish in coconut milk, and indulge in your fair share of rum and coconut cocktails. We love Kato, tasty biscuits made with – you guessed it – coconut milk!

French Polynesia Attractions

Dive back in time and discover Polynesian history at Iipona, one of the best preserved archaeological sites in French Polynesia. The three sites of Kamuihei, Tahakia & Teiipoka make up the largest excavated archaeological area of Nuku Hiva and are well worth a visit. Taste your way through typical Tahitian specialties at the Marché de Pape’ete market, bronze yourself on Tereia Beach and visit Lagon Bleu - a true Polynesian paradise made up of crystal-clear water and coral reefs. Other popular French Polynesia attractions include the Moorea Tropical Garden and the Haranae Petroglyphs.
